Release of information
Please find attached the most current list held by Council of approved
compostable packaging for events participating in the Sustainable Events
Canterbury (SEC) programme. Under SEC, only compostable packaging that has
been vetted by local composting facilities is approved, to ensure
compatibility with local processing systems. Approved products are
typically sourced through the suppliers listed in the attached material,
or via local distributors. Event organisers and their vendors are
responsible for ensuring that any packaging used matches the approved
products on this list. While independent certification (e.g. third-party
testing) may be used by manufacturers, inclusion on the SEC approved list
is the determining requirement for use within the programme.
The “approved packaging” requirements apply only to events that choose to
participate in SEC. Participation in SEC is voluntary. Where an event
organiser elects to participate, they agree to comply with programme
requirements, including ensuring that all food vendors use approved
compostable packaging. This applies regardless of event location. Events
participating in SEC may be held in a range of venues, including:
• public parks,
• council-owned buildings or facilities,
• stadiums, and
• private or commercial premises.
The key determining factor is participation in the SEC programme, not the
venue type.
The Council is not aware of any packaging companies that have been found
to be non-compliant or to have acted unethically against council
requirements within the past 12 months.
Council has not received any funding from packaging companies related to
any Council organised events in the last 12 months.
