        Christchurch City Council

    Kia ora Michael,

On 11 September 2024 you requested the following information, under the
Local Government Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA):

What percentage of land in the city is dedicated (set aside) for car
 parking (both public and private).

Release of information
I understand you are seeking information on the percentage of land in the
city that is dedicated (set aside) for car parking (both public and
private). We don’t maintain this exact information. We have decided to
refuse your request under the following section of the LGOIMA:
o 17(e) – the information requested does not exist or cannot be found

While we do not hold this information, I have provided some information to
 illustrate what we know.

In 2020, we counted the total number of non-residential parking spaces
within the central city, and we estimated there were about 33,000 parking
spaces. The breakdown of these spaces is represented by the following
 diagram:

Using aerial photographs, we identified around 65 hectares of off-street,
non-residential, surface parking in the central city as shown on the map
 below.
Combined with on-street parking, the area used for parking is 98 hectares.
The central city area within the four avenues (excluding Hagley Park) is
421 hectares. Therefore, it’s estimated that at least 23% of the central
city area is used as parking space. This does not include residential
parking spaces such as driveways and garages.

We do not have an estimate for the parking area across the entire city.

Further information from the central city study can be found here:

We also maintain information on the number of temporary parking sites on
properties that were demolished following the earthquakes. Refer to page 7
for the latest update to this information in this report:
