Supporting evidence for DOC statement that kiwi scent is irresistible to dogs

Leo Exel made this Official Information request to Department of Conservation

The request was successful.

From: Leo Exel

Dear Department of Conservation,

In a press release on your website from 02 October 2013 it states that "... dogs are a serious threat to adult kiwi as they find their smell irresistible..."

This statement or variants of it appear widely in DOC material and publications. We query this as our experience with dogs leads us to believe that in bush settings, dogs prefer other scents over kiwi, such as possum, and pig.

Would you please provide any supporting scholarly evidence for this statement.

Thanks,

Leonie Exel
