Rates relief for conservation consents, including those for kiwi protection
Leo Exel made this Official Information request to Far North District Council
The request was successful.
From: Leo Exel
Dear Far North District Council,
On 10 February 2017 Ms Kathryn Ross wrote to the Kiwi Recovery Plan Consultation
Department of Conservation suggesting a variety of ways in which FNDC could assist in kiwi protection. As part of this letter she advised "Council provides rates relief to the owners of 58 properties that are subject to conservation covenants. In 2015 Council remissions totaled $167,500."
Would you please advise, for the period to which that data referred, how many of those conservation covenants receiving rates relief related to kiwi conservation, in particular?
How many of those covenants contained restrictions of some sort on dogs or cats?
Please provide a list of those properties.
Yours faithfully,
Leonie Exel

1. Would you please advise, for the period to which that data referred, how many of those conservation covenants receiving rates relief related to kiwi conservation, in particular?

1. How many of those covenants contained restrictions of some sort on dogs or cats?
The clauses regarding covenants in relation to the 51 properties are phrased in part: “ … carnivorous or omnivorous exotic animals (such as ferrets, cats or dogs) which have the potential to be kiwi predators.” Some of the properties however also read: “However, the current landowners, so long as they retain proprietorship of the land, may keep not more than one dog” or “except that a pet dog or dogs may be kept at the designated house sites under normal control. Any such dog will not be allowed unsupervised access to the Covenanted Area” or “but shall permit domestic dogs, which however shall be kept under control when in any covenanted area."
