Dog figures-detail

Lloyd Jerome made this Official Information request to Department of Conservation

The request was successful.

From: Lloyd Jerome

Dear Department of Conservation,

Under the auspices of the OIA, please could you tell me, from all your records, the following information:

How many individual dogs have been positively identified as having killed or attacked a Kiwi?

And, additionally, of these dogs, a) how many of them were microchipped? b) how many of them carried an identification tag and c) how many of them were under any supervision from their owners?

I am attempting to gather information to see if there is a difference between the behaviour of dogs under supervision, and those classed as uncontrolled or feral. Your support in this project would be greatly appreciated. Any supplementary information in this regard would be most helpful.

If it would be helpful for these national figures to be limited to a fixed time period for the sake of simplicity, I would be amenable to that, but the longer the time-span, the more useful the figures.

Yours faithfully,

Lloyd Jerome

Kia ora Lloyd

I have been asked to provide the information you’ve requested through the
Official Information Act regarding the number of dogs known to have killed
kiwi.  I just wanted to clarify that the Department holds information
regarding the number of kiwi killed by dogs, we don’t have an accurate
number of dogs that have been positively identified as the ones to have
killed those kiwi, since this is not always known.  In most cases we do
not know the circumstances around the deaths i.e. the carcasses are found
and confirmed to have been killed by a dog, but it’s unclear whose dog and
whether they were supervised or not.  Is this information still useful to
you?

If so, this information has not been collated in to a central database,
which means I will contact individual Operational Districts to get the
information that they hold.  Because this is most notably an issue where
humans and kiwi overlap, I plan to only focus on brown kiwi in the North
Island to be able to meet the timeframes under the OIA.

We also do not hold the records on the registration of the few dogs we
have identified in terms of microchipping or identification tags.
Regional Councils who are accountable for dog registrations may have more
information that could be useful to you.

I wanted to confirm whether the records we hold (number of kiwis killed by
dogs as known to DOC) would meet your requirements.

I look forward to hearing back from you

Dear Jessica Scrimgeour,

Thank you so much for your detailed response.

We are very keen on working with DOC to promote safe pet ownership, and that way, keep our dogs (and cats) well apart from vulnerable wildlife.

To that end, and figures you may have on the dogs that have been identified as Kiwi killers would be of great benefit. If you do have any microchip I.D. numbers that would also help.

Yours sincerely,

Lloyd Jerome
