Citizenship Application crisis

Thayr made this Official Information request to Department of Internal Affairs

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Thayr to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Thayr

Dear Department of Internal Affairs,
My questions is based on data provided on previous requests below:
https://fyi.org.nz/request/14230-nz-citi...
https://fyi.org.nz/request/14954-nz-citi...
https://fyi.org.nz/request/15205-citizen...
https://fyi.org.nz/request/15427-citizen...
https://fyi.org.nz/request/15426-citizen...

1- According to previous requests, the main reason for the slower application process is implementing and using a new system. Can you provide which particular parts or issues of the new system cause this big delay ?

2-The average of application processed was 2600 per month in 2019,2018 , but the average of application processed between January-May 2021 is 1300 application, Why even after more than one year of implementing new system average number of application proceed per month between January-May 2021 much less than 2018 or 2019 ? even though the number of people who are working processing applications are the same or even more.

3- Why didn't DIA decide to go back to using the old system if it was much faster and took less to process an application after one year of trying the new system for the whole year ?

4- DIA said it will hire more people to help clear the backlog in August, did newly hired people start working on processing applications or not yet ?

5- Can you provide number of processed application from June 2021 to August 2021 ?

Yours faithfully,

Thayr

Thanks for answer but your respond don't answer my first question
1- According to previous requests, the main reason for the slower application process is implementing and using a new system. Can you provide which particular parts or issues of the new system cause this big delay ?
My question is about which part or feature of new system is causing delay ? I knew the new system causing delay because it is new , but which part or feature is not fully working , or has many bugs or still in experiment phase ?

Yours sincerely,

Thayr

Thank you for your email and for clarifying question one of your request.

I can confirm that no system issues contributed to the delays in citizenship processing timeframes. There is nothing further to add to the explanation already provided to you, explaining what has caused the delays.

It may also be helpful for me to explain that the Department has begun publishing citizenship processing timeframes including the current month being processed on its website. You can find this information via the following link; https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports-cit....

This information is updated weekly should you wish to check current processing timeframes in the future.

In addition, the Department has and continues to proactively release OIA responses relating to citizenship processing timeframes. These include a number of responses with statistics and information about applications currently in progress. You can find the link to these responses here; https://www.dia.govt.nz/Proactive-Releases.

I note that the Department has now responded to several requests from you for information relating to citizenship processing timeframes and would like to confirm that the Department has no further information to provide regarding the citizenship backlog and processing timeframes, and considers the responses already provided to you to have been comprehensive.

I acknowledge the frustration experienced by many surrounding the current citizenship processing times and wish to reassure you the Department has initiatives underway to reduce the citizenship application backlog, speed up processing, and improve general customer experience.

I trust this email has addressed the last of your concerns.
