Clarification of conditions for AT to receive funding from NZTA for weed and vegetation control in the road corridor.
Hana Blackmore made this Official Information request to Auckland Transport
The request was successful.
From: Hana Blackmore
Dear Auckland Transport,
Would you please clarify your LGOIMA response in your letter of 16 September 2019 - (CAS-1147797-T1C5Q3) where you state:
"Auckland Transport must meet the following conditions to receive NZTA funding for weed and vegetation control:
• In urban areas, grass cutting to lawn standard or maintenance of alternative low-cost ground cover treatments in medians and traffic islands only ..."
This has been interpreted by Auckland Council officers to mean that NZTA funding in urban areas is ONLY provided for this grass cutting and ground cover treatments on medians and traffic islands and not for ANYTHING ELSE on the kerb and channel, footpaths or berms.
If this is correct, can you confirm that weed and vegetation control operations in urban areas with chemical, mechanical or thermal technologies etc is NOT ELIGIBLE for NZTA funding and therefore has to be wholly funded by Auckland Transport.
Yours faithfully,
Hana Blackmore

Dear AT Official Information (AT),
Thank you for your reply in response to my request for clarification of conditions for Auckland Transport (AT) to receive funding from the NZTA for weed and vegetation control in the road corridor. Apologies for my delay in responding.
Thank you for your clarification and confirmation that NZTA funding is available in urban areas for not just medians and traffic islands, but footpaths and cycle paths as well. I note that except for these footpaths and cycle paths they EXCLUDE all maintenance of:
… the area between the kerb and the road reserve boundary in urban areas – this is not eligible for funding assistance except as described below in the conditions of funding for vegetation control.
Link here: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/planning-and-in...
This implies that there is NO FUNDING available from NZTA for any roadway kerb and channel work that you currently treat with glyphosate and other treatments. Would you please confirm, if:
(a) this is correct, and
(b) is there any other NZTA work category that Auckland Transport accesses for funding this kerb and channel work?
Yours sincerely,
Hana Blackmore
