We refer to your request for official information dated 28 January 2021 regarding funding for weed 
and vegetation control. Auckland Transport’s response to your request for information is  outlined 
below. 
 
NZ  Transport  Agency  (Waka  Kotahi)  funding  is  provided  in  urban  areas  for  weed  and vegetation 
control, this includes grass cutting to lawn standard or maintenance of alternative low-cost ground 
cover treatments in medians and traffic islands. In addition, Waka Kotahi funds clearing vegetation 
from  public  footpaths,  shared  paths  and  cycle  paths  associated  with  roadways  where  vegetation 
would  impede  safe  access  and  use  for  both  rural  and  urban  areas.  Please  note  there  is  no 
information/clarification  about  the  method  used  that  influences  funding.  For  further  details  please

The amount of funding that Auckland Transport receives from Waka Kotahi for any road maintenance 
activity is limited by the total funding available, therefore, Auckland Transport could deliver eligible 
activities for which it might not receive co-funding from Waka Kotahi.   
 
We trust the above information has addressed the matters raised however, should you believe that 
we have not responded appropriately to your request, you have the right in accordance with section 
27(3) of the LGOIMA to make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman to seek an investigation 
and review in regard to this matter.
