Is weed spraying of the streets an "essential service" during COVID-19 lockdown?

Hana Blackmore made this Official Information request to Auckland Council

The request was successful.

From: Hana Blackmore

Dear Auckland Council,

Would you urgently confirm if weed spraying the streets and roads and parks etc is an "essential service" during the COVID-19 lockdown. If so - what is permitted during each level? If not - when will normal maintenance/spraying re-commence?

Yours faithfully,

Hana Blackmore

Hello Hana,

I have received your question on weed management under the COVID19 levels.
Under Alert Level Four there was no weed management completed by council
in parks, berms or within the kerb and channel in the road corridor.
Vegetation management continued to ensure clear line of sight within the
road corridor, this included herbicide where necessary.

Weed management has recommenced at Alert Level Three with required work
place practices in place e.g. physical distancing.  This was prioritised
reflecting the damage that weeds can have on infrastructure and our
legislative requirements to manage pest plants.

Suppliers will be following the Code of Practice by placing out signage
notifying the public of any weed management operations and contacting
those who have requested to be notified on specific locations. Monthly
newspaper notification will recommence when available.

Further information on weed management by council can be found on the
