Use of bail
Thomas Beagle made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice
The request was partially successful.
From: Thomas Beagle
Dear Ministry of Justice,
I write to you in accordance with the OIA to request information about the use of bail in New Zealand. We are particularly interested in the increased use of bail and some of the potentially unjust situations that can arise.
Therefore I am seeking copies of any reports, position papers, and statistics about:
- Where bail with or without onerous conditions is imposed but charges are then dropped later.
- Where charges are dropped, but people are still prosecuted for breach of bail conditions related to bail for those charges.
- Any statistics on the type and number of bail conditions imposed.
- General statistics about the use of bail over the last 10 years.
I would prefer data to be made available in electronic formats.
Yours faithfully,
Thomas Beagle
