The opposition party transport policy statement is quoted as saying:
"National proposes that in areas where separated cycleways exist, cyclists must use them or else they will receive a fine" Chris Bishop MP, 15/12/2019

Can you please clarify three items:
a) How many km's of *separated* cycleways exist in NZ (not shared paths, or on road cycleways)?
b) What is the average continuous length of a separated cycleway in NZ?
c) Listed by major urban city (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch), how many km's of separated cycleway exist for each?

It's showing currently as 'successful'.

Also would add that a lot of those 'cycle paths' on the gis map that they link to are just plain old roads with no allowance made for cyclists whatsoever.

Hi Rod,

I guess I thought that the information provided did not address your questions.

Looking at the Dunedin information on the GIS is interesting. I cycle every day. There are no separated bicycle tracks in Dunedin, all are shared with pedestrians which creates its own problems although it is safer for recreational cyclists. The much commented one out to the Peninsula (when finished) will be of this type and my guess is that serious cyclists won't use it due to having to dodge pedestrians.

The bicycle lanes are terrible, often less than a metre wide and on the main arterial roads through Dunedin (& therefore off-putting for cycle uptake) with giant concrete buffers to separate from car lanes (which I assume makes cleaning & clearing difficult). In the student area they often have broken glass in them. And they can be both in the (car) traffic direction and against the traffic direction (and for example this changes at Albany Street without notification).

NZTA indicate that there is some sort of cycle infrastructure out to Brighton. There isn't. It's a road and a reasonably dangerous one at that. There is work going on there but from what I can see it's probably just pedestrian pathway.
