Request made under the Official Information Act 1982 
 
Thank you for email of 15 December 2019 requesting the following information under the Official 
Information Act 1982 (the Act): 
 
“a) How many km's of *separated* cycleways exist in NZ (not shared paths, or on road 
cycleways)? 
“b) What is the average continuous length of a separated cycleway in NZ? 
“c) Listed by major urban city (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch), how many km's of 
separated cycleway exist for each?” 
 
We define separated cycleways as facilities exclusively for cycling. They involve some form of physical 
separation from motor traffic and are generally situated on or adjacent to the roadway, usually within 
the road reserve. The separation may involve horizontal and/or vertical components. 
 
The term ‘separated cycleway’ includes facilities known as: ‘protected cycle lanes’ (Auckland 
Transport) and ‘separated cycle lanes’ (Christchurch City Council).  
 
Our records show a total of 110.6km of separated cycleways exist in New Zealand.  This compares to 
a total 1311km of shared pathways and 1550km of on-road cycleways.  It is important to note that 
these totals are derived from the annual returns provided by local councils to the NZ Transport 
Agency, so will include only cycleways subsidised by the Transport Agency.   
 
In response to question (b), because these facilities are reported as local totals rather than as 
individual cycleways, unfortunately we are unable to provide you with a figure for the average 
continuous length of a separated cycleway.  I am therefore refusing your request under section 18(g) 
of the Act as the information requested is not held by the Transport Agency and I have no grounds for 
believing that the information is held by another department or Minister of the Crown or organisation, 
or by a local authority. 
 
We have recently published an online map of cycle routes which you may find useful.  You can find 
this online at http://maphub.nzta.govt.nz/portal/home/gallery.html then by clicking on “Cycle Trail 
Facility”.  Separated cycleways are listed as “cycle paths” in the key on this map.
