Advice received on Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) at airports
Jem Traylen made this Official Information request to Julie Anne Genter
The request was successful.
From: Jem Traylen
Tena koe Julie Anne Genter,
I am concerned about the introduction of AIT scanners at airports which are the source of a great deal of concern for transgender and intersex passengers. I do not recall any consultation by CAA/AvSec on this matter.
What advice, if any, have you received on AIT scanners?
I trust that this request is reasonably straightforward and would be happy to clarify if necessary.
Nga mihi,
Mx Jem Traylen

Tēnā koe Jem
Thank you for your official information request to Hon Julie Anne Genter, Minister for Women, Associate Minister of Health and Associate Minister of Transport.
I just want to clarify your request; are you after any advice Minister Genter received regarding AIT scanners, in her capacity as Minister for Women, Associate Minister of Health, or Associate Minister of Transport? If you want advice Minister Genter received as Associate Minister of Transport, are you particularly after any advice on the introduction of the scanners and particularly anything regarding the consultation requirements?
You may be aware that Minister Genter briefly held responsibility for aviation security as part of her role as Associate Minister of Transport. During that time the office may have received some information relating to the scanners; however, if you are after advice regarding the process for introducing the scanners, Minister Twyford or the CAA may have more relevant information.
If you can let me know which you prefer, we can go from there. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Ngā mihi,
Olivia.

Dear Olivia Kitson - for your office to note:
I have also received a good response from CAA and am now cautiously optimistic that the horror stories that myself and other trans people have experienced overseas will not be repeated here.
I do note, however, that there is some concern over these scanners in our community which could have been alleviated if there had been consultation and communication with us.
I will be approaching the appropriate officials to facilitate this community engagement.
Yours sincerely,
Mx Jem Traylen
