Dear Minister - thank you for your letter attached.
I am more than happy to receive correspondence that has been redacted, therefore protecting the identit of the writer.
And also I may not have been specific in my first request but I would like correspondence in any form (email, text, verbal) between the Ministry, Commissioner of Police and yourself, and Waka Kotahi with regard to the bike rally and cyclists getting on to the bridge.
So to confirm my request, I do not need to identify the person corresponding to you - their name's can be reacted if they are writing as individuals.

Dear TIDSWELL, Joanne,

Thanks for sending me the required information. My understanding of reading the various communications, is that the bike rally people overwhelmed the police at the barrier and illegally entered the bridge lanes, which then were quickly shut down for cars to protect the cyclists. At no time did Waka Kotahi give permission to the Bike rally organisers to cross the bridge, but on FB postings some of the cyclists said they did have permission to access the bridge lanes.
And I also understand that only one arrest was made, and that person was one of the first to breach the police barrier. To me this does not send a good message to the public - that in fact if you feel strongly about something and have the numbers it's ok to overpower the police. I feel very sorry for those police on the frontline who tried their best to stop people going across. I wonder why the organisers of this rally were not prosecuted for inciting the protesters to do this but I guess that is a question for the Police Commissioner.

Yours sincerely,

Donna McMillan
