Surveillance or Activities related to People Against Prisons Aotearoa
Yu Le Kong-Lim made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice
The request was successful.
From: Yu Le Kong-Lim
Tēnā koutou,
In light of further allegations of spying and surveillance by Thompson and Clark upon some activist groups including Oil Free Wellington (as publicised by Radio New Zealand in https://www.radionz.co.nz/national/progr...), I would like to find out more about whether there has been surveillance upon other activist groups such as People Against Prisons Aotearoa (formerly known as No Pride in Prisons, and for the purposes of the OIA requests, included in the meaning of “People Against Prisons Aotearoa”).
Please release the following information:
1) Whether Thompson and Clark has cooperated with the Ministry of Justice to undertake intelligence activities upon members of People Against Prisons Aotearoa. If so, what were the nature of these activities, what was the duration of these activities, and when and where did these occur.
2) Whether any other non-public entity has cooperated with the Ministry of Justice to undertake intelligence activities upon members of People Against Prisons Aotearoa. If so, what were the nature of these activities, what was the duration of these activities, and when and where did these occur.
3) Whether SIS or GCSB has provided or is providing advice or assistance to the Ministry of Justice to activities regarding People Against Prisons Aotearoa and/or member(s) of People Against Prisons Aotearoa (eg. as covered under s10(2)(a) and s13(1)(b) of the Intelligence and Security Act 2017). If so, what was the nature of the advice or assistance and how many instances of advice or assistance have been provided.
4) If activities have been carried out upon members of People Against Prisons Aotearoa, the number of instances this has been carried out. If so, what was the nature of these activities and what was the reason for these activities.
Please also explain any relevant caveats that should be kept in mind when analysing this information, including the licence under which it is released. Please provide this information in an accessible, searchable format.
If any part of my request is unclear, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If any of the information that I have requested is unavailable or would be difficult to retrieve, but similar information might be readily available, I would be happy to discuss altering or refining my request.
In accordance with s12(a) of the Official Informations Act, I am a New Zealand citizen, and so I am eligible to make requests under the OIA.
Ngā mihi,
Yu Le Kong-Lim
