Reasons why Kaipara District Mayor is resigning after one year of a three year term

Lynda Sampson made this Official Information request to Nanaia Mahuta

The request was partially successful.

From: Lynda Sampson

Dear Nanaia Mahuta,

I am writing to you as a KDC ratepayer.
I would like to know why mayor Greg Gent has resigned as mayor after only one year in office.
When he stood for the position as mayor, he did say it would be part time, voters presumed he meant maybe 3 days out of 5, and he was duly elected, however after just one year in office he is resigning.

We have had government commissioners, without a council, for approximately 5 years which has been undemocratic, and very costly to the ratepayers. Last year we were able to elect a mayor and councillors.

We are now in a position, whereby we have a substitute mayor who was elected as a councillor, so once again we find ourselves being governed undemocratically, we will now have to have an election that we can ill aford, and if the elected mayor is one of the councillors, we will then have to have another election for another councillor.

We have had historic problems with mismanagement of funds, the now Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Winston Peters has been trying to help us rectify these problems over the years, and has deemed them as a miscarriage of justice.

Mr. Greg Gent is leaving without a plausible explanation to us as ratepayers, and without any apology, for putting council and ratepayers, in this deplorable position.

We are also still paying for two commissioners, which is unexceptable, we need your help as minister of local government on this matter,

Yours faithfully,
Lynda Sampson
