Wildfire Statistics (Large Fires)
Alan Thompson made this Official Information request to Fire and Emergency New Zealand
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Alan Thompson to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Alan Thompson
Dear Fire and Emergency New Zealand,
After querying the accuracy of the data I have now been advised that the information you provided to my previous OIA Request (your Ref 18821) was incorrect. Your letter dated 29 October 2025 refers. I seek then the correct information as follows:
1. Please confirm that you classify a "Large Wildfire" as one exceeding 1000 hectares and not 10 hectares as previously advised.
2. For the period 2009/10 through 2024/25 (15 fire seasons) please provide the name, date and area burnt for each fire that you classify as a "Large Wildfire".
3. For the previous 61 years, please provide the name, date and area burnt for each fire you classify as a "Large Fire". In the event that any of this information is not available, please provide what data you do have that enables the comparison between the occurrence of "Large Wildfire" since 2010 and the previous 61 years.
Yours sincerely,
Alan Thompson

Zealand, requesting the following information under the Official
Information Act 1982:
1. Please confirm that you classify a "Large Wildfire" as one exceeding
1000 hectares and not 10 hectares as previously advised.
2. For the period 2009/10 through 2024/25 (15 fire seasons) please provide
the name, date and area burnt for each fire that you classify as a "Large
Wildfire".
3. For the previous 61 years, please provide the name, date and area burnt

We understand you have received an email from the Deputy Chief Executive
Prevention on 25 November 2025. The email reply included confirmation we
classify a large fire as any over 1000 hectares. The reply also included
two spreadsheets of data which we reattach for visibility. The attached
spreadsheets include a list of large vegetation fires and the area burnt
from 2010 onwards, broken down by land use categories. They also include a
spreadsheet showing a comparison of frequency of large wildfires back to
1946. We consider that this data resolves your request and provides the
information requested in questions two and three above.
We trust that the information being provided is of assistance. If you
require further information, please email
