Rural Fires for the financial reporting periods of 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Alan Thompson made this Official Information request to Fire and Emergency New Zealand

The request was successful.

From: Alan Thompson

Dear New Zealand Fire Service Commission,

The Discussion Document released by DIA in May 2015 included a graph of rural fire over the financial reporting periods 1981/82 through 2014/15. This data was supplied to DIA by the National Rural Fire Authority from their annual (financial year) statistics. Whilst the graph quite clearly indicated that both the number of fires and the total area burnt was steadily trending down the document quite deliberately stated that "there is an increasing number of vegetation fires". Previous questions to DIA failed to identify why they chose to publish such a claim when the evidence clearly indicated otherwise.

The Commission no longer publishes an annual report of fire statistics and I seek to understand the implications of DIA's statements on an ongoing basis.

Can you please provide me with:

1. The annual data on the number of rural fires in NZ and the total area burnt for the financial reporting period 2015/16. A break down by plantation, public land and other would assist if available.

2. The annual data on the number of rural fires in NZ and the total area burnt for the financial reporting period 2016/17. A breakdown by plantation, public and other would assist if available.

Yours faithfully,

Alan Thompson
Lower Hutt
