Dear Fire and Emergency New Zealand,

Under the provisions of the Official Information Act I request the following information regarding the advice from Fire and Emergency that "in the last 15 years the occurrence of large damaging wildfires has increased and continues to do so".

1. For the years 2022022/23 and 2023/24, what were the total number of vegetation fires and the area burnt for each of the follow vegetation fire classifications:
(a) Public/Conservation lands;
(b) Planted forestry lands;
(c) All other lands.

2. What are the metrics and the trigger values of those metrics that FENZ use to classify a vegetation fire as “large”?

3. What are the numbers of these “large” fires and the total area burnt for each of the last 15 years as advised by FENZ?

Dear Official Information Requests,

The advice re a 10 day extension is noted. You state the reason being that "the request is for a large quantity of official information".

It is interesting to note that FENZ cannot provide this sort of basic business information in less than 30 working days.

Perhaps you might check with Kerry Gregory or Rebecca Keoghan as they are publically stating that large wildfires are increasing. To make this claim they must then know what a large fire is and have the annual numbers that show an increase. They may be willing to share this data with the rest of the organisation if you are having difficulty accessing it.
