Dear Palmerston North City Council,
I would like to request all information related to the Palmy Pooches Facebook page. It seems to have stopped being active in 2023 and I want to know why. Could you give me all records that mention this page. Thank you.

I refer to your official information request received on 12 September 2025
for information on the Palmy Pooches Facebook page (our ref: SRC0330195).
Our response
Our Communications Manager provides the following information:
We have not posted on the Palmy Pooches page since 2023, when we started
sharing information about our shelter dogs on our main Palmerston North
City Council Facebook page (main page). We made the change because posting
on our main page reaches far more people and engages a much wider
community. On the Palmy Pooches page, we found that the same people were
engaging with posts, limiting exposure. Since moving posts to our main
page we have recorded the following information:
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|Comparison |Palmy Pooches page (Aug 2023|PNCC main page (recent|
| |– 3 dog posts): |3 dog posts): |
|--------------------+----------------------------+----------------------|
|Average reach |3,623 accounts |78,249 accounts |
|--------------------+----------------------------+----------------------|
|Average shares |40 |162 |
|--------------------+----------------------------+----------------------|
|Total link clicks to|16 |2,045 |
|website | | |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Sharing posts on our main page has opened up a far wider pool of people to
see, like, and share the posts, improving the chances of finding new homes
for the dogs. This change also helps us streamline our online presence,
monitor comments more easily and address any issues quickly. Beyond
Facebook, we continue to promote dogs through occasional posts on other
social media channels, radio interviews and keep our website updated most
days, where many people visit to learn more and apply to adopt. Over the
past year we’ve had approximately ten thousand users visit the lost dog
and adoptions page more than 30,000 times.
We left the Palmy Pooches Facebook page up initially in case our trial of
using the main page wasn’t as successful as we had hoped. We are planning
to remove the page at the end of October when we update our channels and
information ahead of the new council being sworn in. The page will remain
visible to the public until that time. We have software that archives all
interactions of the page in case we need to refer to anything in the
future.
Regarding your request for records, we hold no other documentation about
the Palmy Pooches page, other than the message we have drafted below to
post on that page ahead of the removal of the page:
“It’s been a while. . . you probably haven’t seen us here for the last
couple of years! Since 2023, we’ve been sharing our shelter dogs on the
main Palmerston North City Council Facebook page instead. We made the
change so more people could see the dogs. On this page, we found the same
people were seeing and engaging with posts, but on the main PNCC page, we
reach a much wider audience, which means more chances for our furry
friends to find their forever homes. You can still see all our adoptable
dogs on the PNCC Facebook page and on our website, which is updated most
days. From time to time, we also share them through radio interviews and
other channels, all to help our dogs get seen by as many people as
possible! We’ll be tidying up this page soon, so make sure to check the
main PNCC page to keep up with all the latest pups looking for homes.
Thanks for your support and helping us find loving homes for Palmy’s
pooches!”
