Lyttelton Tunnel

Markus Alexander made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency

Currently waiting for a response from New Zealand Transport Agency, they must respond promptly and normally no later than (details and exceptions).

From: Markus Alexander

Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,

It is my understanding that the Lyttelton Tunnel has a transverse ventilation system supplying fresh air into the tunnel at regular intervals along the tunnel. In a previous request from 2018 it was stated the air quality including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, air flow and visibility was monitored.

How are these gases and the air flow monitored? What equipment is used?

How many primary and backup systems are in place to ensure these levels are accurately monitored?

What are the acceptable levels for each gas and acceptable air flow within the Lyttelton Tunnel?

What is the procedure for when the fresh air ventilation fan is shut down for routine maintenance and tunnel cleaning?

What is the maximum time the ventilation fan can be shut down for while still allowing cars or workers in the tunnel?

Yours faithfully,

Markus A
