From: Kalan Baker

Dear National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Limited,

What weight boat/vehicle do you tow behind any passenger vehicle you have in your fleet requiring a standard full licence? Have just read article about your recent purchase of trucks with 4500kg towing capacity at 170k each and am interested as to why didn't buy 70 series landcruisers at 75k each with 3500kg capacity.also what vehicle were you previously using to do the job these new trucks are replacing?
Yours faithfully,

Kalan baker

Kia ora Kalan,

Thank you for your OIA request and the further clarification of your request. We respond as follows.

1. How much do the boats weigh that the Chevrolet Silverados are towing?

We have five large power boats (approx. 7.0 metres in length). The boats weigh from 2500 to 3050 kg and the trailer GVM ranges from 3400 to 3500 kg.

2. What vehicles were NIWA using to tow the boats that the new Chevrolet Silverados are now towing?

Two of these new trucks are replacements for existing Chevrolets. The other two are replacements for Toyota Landcruisers.

Please note, under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.

Nāku, nā,
Melissa
