Hydrogen Truck Trial Costs compared to Diesel and Electric Trucks

Mr Ross made this Official Information request to New Zealand Post Limited

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Mr Ross to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Mr Ross

Dear New Zealand Post Limited,

Could you please provide a comparison of running and maintenance costs for the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell truck compared to your equivalent Diesel and Electric trucks (equivalent being a truck hauling roughly the same sort of loads and distances), and maintenance frequencies for each fuel types (daily, weekly, monthly, etc), for the same period spanning the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell truck trial.

I understand dollar amounts cannot be used due to commercial sensitivity, so please use relative values where Diesel is equal to 1.
So, for example, running costs for an electric truck per week might be 0.2 compared to a Diesel truck per week.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Ross

Kia Ora Mr Ross,
Firstly thank you for your patience.
It is important to note the maintenance costs for the vehicle are managed
by the contractor, but we are aware that they’re equivalent to the
maintenance and servicing costs of a diesel equivalent.
This isn’t unexpected, as the maintenance costs of a diesel truck increase
sharply in Year’s 3-5 (and beyond), whereas the Fuel Cell truck is
expected to remain constant and stable for the next 8-10 years.
By replacing a counterpart diesel truck, the XCIENT stops 170 tonnes of
CO₂ per year from being emitted into our atmosphere.

Comparison details
NZ Post’s XCIENT hydrogen-powered truck facts:
Distance (kilometres)           100,000
Diesel eliminated (litres)       41667
CO2kg (1Ltr = 2.68kg)             111667
CO2t (1Ltr = 2.68kg)               111.7
* Replaced a truck using 1.0l/2.4km

• Mileage to date: 66,000kms
• Co2 avoided: 73,700 kg
• Average H2 consumption: 12.5 kms / 1 KG
• Diesel avoided: 27,500 ltrs
• Air purified: 42,000kg (Daily intake for 3800 New Zealanders)
• Daily fuel: 27~30kg, will move to will move to 50~90kg with
