Number of enforcement officers in Auckland

Jennifer Ward made this Official Information request to Auckland Transport

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Jennifer Ward to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Jennifer Ward

Dear Auckland Transport,

After my vehicle was blocked in my garage for hours, AT responded to my complaint by advising me that:

“Currently, our Parking Compliance team only have approximately 130 Officers for the entire Auckland region - from Pukekohe in the South (coast-to-coast) to Wellsford in the North, covering every town and city centre between. This coverage is 21hrs per day, 7 days per week. On average, 3,500 requests for Service (RFS) come through each month. These are sometime safety/ priority driven requests that need to be attended to first, and regular RFS activity is then responded to by the next available Parking Officer. “

Additionally, I was unable to have the offending vehicle towed without an enforcement officer issuing a ticket. Consequently I couldn’t get to work or meet my other commitments.

The vehicle blocking my car was unregistered and unwarranted and is potentially a dangerous vehicle being used on the roadway. The fines for these infringements would have totalled several hundred dollars.

So my questions are;

1. Will AT be hiring additional enforcement officers to deal with the current shortage?

2. Is revenue from infringements able to pay for more enforcement officers?

3. If not, why not?

4. How is permitting illegal parking, due to grossly inadequate enforcement staffing levels, succeeding in deterring such behaviour?

5. How does this level of staffing enable active transport users to freely access the footpaths and shared spaces?

6. Why are individuals unable to have illegally parked and obstructive vehicles towed?

7. How does this lack of enforcement help build a world class city when it’s effectively a free-for-all carpark?

Yours faithfully,

Jennifer Ward
