Dear Lilly Chapman

Official information request for information about Deep Packet Inspection

I refer to your official information request dated 15 September 2023 for
information about deep packet inspection.

Storage of private data is covered in N4L’s [2]Privacy Statement, which
should be read in conjunction with this OIA response.

Regarding the N4L network with deep packet inspection (DPI) provided to
schools in New Zealand.

1) What data is collected and stored from clients using your network with
DPI?

DPI is performed locally on the network firewall installed on the school
premises. Based on what the firewall detects, the following types of logs
are sent to central logging servers. (See Part A: All Services of N4L
Privacy Statement)

·      your network user name, for example, your first and last name,
school ID or email address

·      information about your device such as its type, browser, IP
address, or unwanted programmes on it that communicate over the network
such as viruses

·      information about the applications you use and websites you visit
(including websites you have tried to visit but have been blocked by our
filtering service for security or safety reasons)

2) How long is the data stored?

The data mentioned in the response to question 1 is stored for a maximum
of 90 days.

Aggregated data is stored indefinitely for reporting purposes. The use of
aggregated data is covered in section 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6 of the N4L Privacy
Statement.

3) Who can access stored data?

Access to the stored data is covered by the Privacy Act and covered by
N4L’s Privacy Statement. Stored data is available to N4L staff supporting
the N4L managed network. For information on data use and disclosure of
information to other parties, please refer to sections 2 and 3 of the N4L

Yours sincerely
Sandy Brown
