Good morning Mr Mills
We are actioning your request however we just need clarification around 'railway housing stock'. Are you referring to railway houses that are rented out to staff members or are you meaning ownership for purpose of staff accommodation?
KiwiRail did acquire some housing for future railway designation however, the holiday homes are owned by the New Zealand Railways Staff Welfare Trust, a separate legal entity that KiwiRail does not own.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Louise

Dear Mr Mills
Thank you for your email dated 13 January 2015 requesting the following information under the Official Information Act 1982 "if KiwiRail Group/NZ Railway Corporation still own railway houses since the railway housing stock was sold in 1988, and if so, how many houses are still owned, and in what area(s)." We asked for clarification of your request and you confirmed you were seeking 'information on houses that are rented out to staff'.
KiwiRail or NZRC do not own any houses that are rented out to staff. However, as advised KiwiRail owns 27 residential houses in Onehunga, acquired for a future railway designation Auckland and 1 house in Cass, Canterbury. These are all residential leases to members of the public, rented at current market rates.
For completeness, there are several holiday homes owned by the New Zealand Railways Staff Welfare Trust, a separate legal entity that KiwiRail/NZRC does not own.
We hope this satisfies your request.
Under section 28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and review of this decision by way of complaint to an Ombudsman. Refer to www.ombudsmen.govt.nz for more information.
Regards
Louise
