Health Data
David Farrar made this Official Information request to Health New Zealand
The request was successful.
From: David Farrar
Dear Health New Zealand,
I am seeking data on a number of health indicators. For each indicator I would ideally like the data for each calendar year from 2008 to 2022 but if going all the way back to 2008 is impossible or too difficult, it is fine to start from a later date. It is also fine if different indicators start from different years.
The data I seek is for all of New Zealand:
1 The proportion of emergency department patients who were admitted, discharged, or transferred from an Emergency Department (ED) within six hours, on either a quarterly or annual basis
2 The number of elective surgical procedures done each calendar year
3 The proportion of eight- month-olds who had their primary course of immunisation at six weeks, three months and five months on time, on either a quarterly or annual basis
4 The proportion of Under 25s able to access specialist mental health services within three weeks of referral, on either a quarterly or annual basis
5 The number of patients who have waited over 12 months for an elective treatment, on an annual basis
6 The number of mental health beds in the public health system, on an annual basis
7 The number of doctors and nurses in the public health system, on an annual basis
8 The number of patients who had to wait more than 42 days for an MRI scan, on an annual basis
9 The number of patients who had to wait more than 42 days for a CT scan, on an annual basis
10 The proportion of patients triaged as having a High Suspicion of Cancer (HSCAN) by a secondary or tertiary care facility to the patients’ first treatment, on a quarterly or annual basis
11 The proportion of people referred for non-urgent mental health seen within three weeks and eight weeks, on an annual basis
If some of this data is easier to collate than others, I am happy to receive it in portions.
I am also happy to clarify any part of my request
Yours faithfully,
David Farrar

Dear hnzOIA,

Health New Zealand
Tçnâ koe David,
Thank you for your email of 28 March 2023, asking for specific health data
under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). Please find an update
about your request below.
I am seeking data on a number of health indicators. For each indicator I
would ideally like the data for each calendar year from 2008 to 2022 but
if going all the way back to 2008 is impossible or too difficult, it is
fine to start from a later date. It is also fine if different indicators
start from different years.
The data I seek is for all of New Zealand:
1 The proportion of emergency department patients who were admitted,
discharged, or transferred from an Emergency Department (ED) within six
hours, on either a quarterly or annual basis
2 The number of elective surgical procedures done each calendar year
4 The proportion of Under 25s able to access specialist mental health
services within three weeks of referral, on either a quarterly or annual
basis
5 The number of patients who have waited over 12 months for an elective
treatment, on an annual basis
6 The number of mental health beds in the public health system, on an
annual basis
7 The number of doctors and nurses in the public health system, on an
annual basis
8 The number of patients who had to wait more than 42 days for an MRI
scan, on an annual basis
9 The number of patients who had to wait more than 42 days for a CT scan,
on an annual basis
10 The proportion of patients triaged as having a High Suspicion of Cancer
(HSCAN) by a secondary or tertiary care facility to the patients’ first
treatment, on a quarterly or annual basis
11 The proportion of people referred for non-urgent mental health seen
within three weeks and eight weeks, on an annual basis
If some of this data is easier to collate than others, I am happy to
receive it in portions.
This email is to let you know that Te Whatu Ora needs more time to make a
decision on the above parts of your request.
The Act requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no
later than 20 working days after the day we received your request.
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit and we are
therefore writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make our
decision, to 9 June 2023.
This extension is required because the volume of information is such that
a proper response cannot reasonably be made within the original time
limit.
In response to part three of your request:
3 The proportion of eight- month-olds who had their primary course of
immunisation at six weeks, three months and five months on time, on either
a quarterly or annual basis
This information is publicly available
at: [1]www.health.govt.nz/our-work/preventative-health-wellness/immunisation/immunisation-coverage/national-and-regional-immunisation-data.
If you have any questions, please contact us at [2][Health New Zealand request email]
If you are not happy with this extension, you have the right to make a
complaint to the Ombudsman. Information about how to do this is available
at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or by phoning 0800 802 602.
