What are the new CCTV-like cameras on many traffic lights?

G. M. Dover made this Official Information request to Auckland Transport

The request was successful.

From: G. M. Dover

Dear Auckland Transport,

I have noticed there are white cameras (that look like CCTV cameras) on a lot of new traffic light installations. I have also started noticing them on larger intersections such as at Highbrook Dr and Maurice Paykel Pl in East Tamaki, Auckland and many other locations.

1) What is the primary purpose of the cameras? Traffic CCTV, pedestrian CCTV, or ANPR (Automatic Number-Plate Recognition?
2) Who is the governing body for the footage?

Yours faithfully,

G. M. Dover

Dear Info (AT),

Many thanks for the response.

3) Does the footage get used to adjust traffic light phasings to improve traffic flow?
4) Are the video feeds available online?
5) What legislation needs to be followed in regards to privacy and inadvertent acquisition of footage of the public?

Yours sincerely,

G. M. Dover

Kia ora  G. M.,

We've now reviewed the details of your case (case
number CAS-282438-H3Q0V4).

Thanks for reaching out with further questions relating to the CCTV
footage recorded at larger intersections.

I appreciate your patience whilst we’ve been investigating your
concerns.

To answer your queries in order:

Alongside security measures, CCTV footage is used to adjust traffic
light phasing, to improve traffic flow.

This footage assists us with better management of the road network.

The footage is not available online.  CCTV footage is only given to the NZ
Police upon request. We do not provide footage to members of the public
directly for privacy reasons.

It’s also worth noting, all CCTV footage is deleted after 7 days.

As an organisation, we’re bound by the Privacy Act 2020 in this
situation. Essentially, the public can be filmed in a public space,
however, there are some guidelines by the Privacy commissioner.

For more information, please click [1]here.

Thanks for reaching out

Thanks again for reaching out. Please don’t hesitate in contacting us
again if you have further concerns or questions, we’d be happy to help.

I have now closed your case.

All the best for a safe and happy rest of your week.
