Review of NZ Police Response to the Whakaari/White Island Disaster
Alan Thompson made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
The request was successful.
From: Alan Thompson
Dear New Zealand Police,
NZ Police undertook a major role in the response to the Whakaari/White Island Disaster. There does how seem to be some confusion as to the NZ Police role in terms of the NZ Coordinated Incident Management System which is mandated by Government as the system to be used to manage such and multi-agency events. NZ Police has advised that Civil Defence were the Lead Agency whereas CD have advised that for the SAR phase of the response Police were the Lead Agency and their role was one of support only.
Be that as it may, it is written into Police policy that a Review or "Debrief" is undertaken for major SAR operations.
Under the terms of the OIA I request a copy of the formal Review or Debrief undertaken by NZ Police following the Whakaari/White Island Search and Rescue operation undertaken in December last year.
Yours faithfully,
Alan Thompson
