Leah Trass made this Official Information request to Ministry of Social Development
Response to this request is long overdue. By law Ministry of Social Development should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.
From: Leah Trass
Dear Ministry of Social Development,
1.Does the ministry keep records of branches of CYF that receive complaints against them?
If yes what are the number of complaints received by/against each branch? (Year since records begun to present)
Please identify by area and number. (example Christchurch - *number*, Hamilton- *number*)
If not, why not?
2. During investigations of complaints regarding the actions of a branch office, where it is identified to be a problem area, what procedure does the ministry have to insure past cases are re-looked at, to insure other work by social workers within that branch are not without error also?
3. Are families contacted that their cases handled by that social worker/branch was not in the best interest of the child and remedy made towards those families (in cases where such actions resulted in child/ren uplifted etc) regardless if a complaint was made or not?
4. In cases of poor social work handling that resulted in children being removed from the home, what remedies of family repair etc are offered to that family?
5. In cases where further damage, including financial and emotional stresses were caused what remedy is offered to families for the short and long term impact of such errors? Please include policy regarding formula for working out payments if any.
Yours faithfully,
Leah Trass
