Howick Ward all car break-ins/damage/theft while parked in public spaces 12 mths to now

Janet Dickson made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Janet Dickson

Dear New Zealand Police,

As a New Zealand citizen born and bred, and under the OIA plus LGOIMA and Privacy Act, I respectfully request asap a categorised list of all reported vehicle break-ins, damage or theft in the Howick Ward, for the last 12 months to the date of your research. Please restrict the data to those vehicles that were parked in public spaces - streets, parks, reserves, public car parks - open or covered - at all times of day.

I would be grateful if the information could be easily accessed and intelligible to the normal public!

We are struggling under an onslaught of just such theft in our specific area - almost daily - and we need to take steps to curb it, gathering information that might be of help to the Police and to our local community.

Yours faithfully,

Janet Dickson

New Zealand Police

Dear Janet,

I refer to your Official Information Act (OIA) request dated 9 September
2019 in which you requested the following:

·          A categorised list of reported vehicle break-ins, damage and
theft in the Howick Ward, for the last 12 months to the date of your
research

·          Please restrict the data to those vehicles that were parked in
public spaces – streets, parks, reserves, public car parks – open or
covered – at all times of day.

Police publish statistics based on Police boundaries. Thus, the
information provided is for the Howick Police station.

The table below shows the number of reported victimisations for “Illegal
use of a Motor Vehicle” and “Theft of Motor Vehicle Parts or Contents” for
the period from July 2018 to July 2019 broken down by the location of the
occurrence. There were no reported victimisations for ‘Theft of a Motor
Vehicle’ for the period specified.

I trust this information is sufficient for your purposes. If you have any
questions regarding this data, please feel free to contact me via
[1][email address] .

You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are
not satisfied with Police’s response to your request.

Regards,

I found the above response was in our "holding pen" today. (The holding pen collects emails with invalid email addresses, such as when an agency mistypes the address.)

Dear New Zealand Police,
Thank you for the information you have posted.
I find the format confusing, badly presented, difficult to follow and not up to date.
I also know that just in the Central Howick area there has been much more damage to and theft from parked vehicles than this work shows, which possibly means people are not reporting the incidents to you. This is sad, as it skews the facts.
But thank you anyway.
Yours faithfully,
Janet Dickson

Good morning

I apologise for the way that table came through to you. It looks like it
lost its formatting and became near unreadable. I have attached a PDF
version which should be clearer.
