From: WorkSafe New Zealand OIA

Dear Margot Neas

Thank you for your request for information that was transferred from ACC
to WorkSafe New Zealand on 1 February 2017.

Enquires have been made and we can advise the following in response to
your questions.

1. Number of deaths related to activity in the New Zealand outdoors.

WorkSafe only holds information relating to workplace deaths. To be able
to determine whether a workplace fatality occurred outside would require
accessing each investigation file individually. It is likely that we would
refuse this part of your request as it would involve too much collation
and research. You can search through workplace fatality information on our
website here:
[1]http://www.worksafe.govt.nz/worksafe/res...

The Ministry of Health provide mortality information and causes of death
on their website and information can be found here: [2]publish annually
statistical information about causes of death.

2. Number of deaths related to activities carried out by New Zealand
adventure tourism companies

WorkSafe can provide fatality information relating to an incident
involving a business registered under the Health and Safety in Employment
(Adventure Activities) Regulations 2011. This came into effect on 4
November 2014.

3. Causes of deaths related to activity in the New Zealand outdoors &
adventure tourism companies.

WorkSafe does not hold information relating to cause of death, this is
provided by the Coroner. As advised some of this information may be
available in the link provided above in question 1.

4. Nationality of the deceased

WorkSafe is unable to provide information relating to nationality from the
data provided to you in response to question number 2.

5. Age range of the deceased

WorkSafe can provide information relating to age from the data provided to
you in response to question number 2.

6. Any notable trends.

WorkSafe New Zealand does not hold any trend data relating to adventure
activities.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or you would like to discuss
the scope of your request further. WorkSafe will respond to questions 2
and 5, you can expect a response by 2 March 2017.

Kind regards

Dear Margot Neas

On 8 February 2017 you were advised by email that WorkSafe New Zealand
could only answer questions two and five of your OIA request. The answers
to those questions are as follows:

2.            Number of deaths related to activities carried out by New
Zealand adventure tourism companies?

As you were previously advised, WorkSafe can provide fatality information
relating to an incident involving a business registered under the Health
and Safety in Employment (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2011 (which
came into effect on 4 November 2014). I can advise there have been 2
deaths related to activities carried out by companies registered under the
adventure activities regulations.

5.            Age range of the deceased ?

The deceased were aged 56 and 58 years old.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have further questions please
contact [1][email address]

Regards
