Sudden Deaths and Heart Conditions in Athletes

Chris McCashin made this Official Information request to Sport and Recreation New Zealand

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Chris McCashin to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Chris McCashin

Dear Sport and Recreation New Zealand,

In 2021 we have seen an unprecedented number of amateur and elite athletes either dropping dead on the field notably the following

Yusuke Kinoshita - 27 year old baseballer died
Jeremy Chardy - 34 year old tennis player sidelined with health issues
Haziq Kamaruddin - 27 year old archer died
Christian Eriksen - 29 year old collapsed - may resume career with pacemaker
Sergio Aguero - 33 year old retires with heart condition
Whitnee Abriska - 19 year old died of cardiac arrest
Franck Berrier - 37 died of heart attacks playing social tennis
Samuel Kalu - 24 years old on field cardiac arrest

This is just the tip of the iceberg and there are 100's more. I also understand there has been a New Zealand club rugby player who died on the field this year. Can Sport and Recreation New Zealand please provide the following

- Number of persons who have died on the field/in action from 2000-2021
- Any and all information provided to Sport and Recreation New Zealand by Ministry of Health, any agencies, NGO's organisations warning to expect a rise of deaths in athletes and the reasons they are providing

Are Sport and Recreation New Zealand aware that a bad year previously was eight globally in total. There have been 100's this year including cardiac arrests in children. Is this something Sport and Recreation expect in the coming years - heart conditions, sudden deaths and are there any papers that are being worked on and what they might see as the cause for this worrying trend.

I know what the issue is but have Sport and Recreation New Zealand also been corrupted?

Yours faithfully,

Chris McCashin

Dear Media,

Are you able to please break this down for me

- I don't want to know how many people have died from sports such as adventure sports - I want to know if the athlete has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest or event whilst they are playing the sport

I know of one athlete playing rugby last year who died in action, which prior to last year was a rare event in amateur and professional sports with a bad year being 8 deaths.

Please provide the information for the years I mentioned in the following table format.

Individual Sport - Year/Date - Died in Action (sudden cardiac event/similar) - Age of deceased

Thanks

Yours sincerely,

Chris McCashin

Dear SportNZ Policy,

No I am not happy with the information provided.

I don't want to know if the person died from the sport.

If it is easier please do the following.

Sport - Date - COD is specifically Cardiac arrest or similar during action

I want to know if a person died of a sudden cardiac event whilst competing broken down into amateur and professional sports.

Yours sincerely,

Chris McCashin

Dear SportNZ Policy,

I suggest Sport NZ start watching for athletes having issues across the country including children.

There has to be something in the water... mRNA maybe?
