Online Reporting of Crime

Dan Hawke made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Dan Hawke

Dear New Zealand Police,

I am looking for information regarding the reasons behind the inability to report crime online to the New Zealand Police.

Can you please supply me with the following:

1. A list of research or projects undertaken or underway to assess the feasibility and/or effectiveness of reporting crime online.
2. The results of any research or projects completed so far, or the estimated completion dates of any projects currently in progress.
3. The results of any research, communications, or comparison done with other law enforcement agencies overseas regarding reporting crime online.
4. Any statistics or research held by NZ Police regarding the proportion of crimes that are currently unreported, ideally divided by victim age groups.

Yours faithfully,

Dan Hawke
New Zealand Citizen residing in New Zealand

Dear Mr Hawke

I refer to your Official Information Act request of 4 June 2016. You asked
for:

1.     A list of research or projects undertaken or underway to assess the
feasibility and/or effectiveness of reporting crime online.

2.     The results of any research or projects completed so far, or the
estimated completion dates of any projects currently in progress.

3.     The results of any research, communications, or comparison done
with other law enforcement agencies overseas regarding reporting crime
online.

4.     Any statistics or research held by NZ Police regarding the
proportion of crimes that are currently unreported, ideally divided by
victim age group.

Pursuant to section 15A of the Official Information Act 1982, I have been
asked to advise you of the requirement to extend the time limit to respond
to your request. The period of the extension is until 2 August 2016.

The reason for the extension is that the time required to research and
collate the requested information and the consultations necessary to make
a decision on the request are such that a proper response cannot
reasonably be made within the original time limit.

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act
1982, to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision to extend
the time limit for deciding upon your request.

Yours sincerely
