Seized Firearms
Malcolm Lock made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
New Zealand Police did not have the information requested.
From: Malcolm Lock
Dear New Zealand Police,
I saw recently online the following statement by Mr Chris Cahill
"One police district that did keep good records in the past 12 month seized 538 firearms."
SOURCE:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/...
I request the following information under the Official Information Act,
1. What policing district is referred to in Mr Chris Cahills statement?
2. Over what twelve month period does Mr Cahill refer too?
3. The amount of each type of firearm in each of the categories A,B,C,E?
4. How many of the 538 seized firearms were seized from licenced firearm holders?
5. How many firearms were returned to the person from whom they were seized?
6. How many licenced firearm holders, whose firearms were seized in the 12 month period referred too, were charged with a firearms offense under the Arms Act 1983 or other relevant Act or Regulations?
7. Of those charged, how many received convictions, or are pending trial?
8. Of the firearms (if any) that were returned to the original licenced firearms holder, what was the original reasons for the seizure of the firearms?
9. What was the largest amount of firearms seized in one seizure, and categories of each firearm seized?
This request does not require any personal details of any person living or deceased, and as stated by Mr Cahill good records were kept so the information should be readily available and not consume to much police time or resources to supply
Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Lock

Dear SEDGWICK, Alexandria,
Thank you for your prompt reply to my OIA request
fyi-request-611 [email address]. orq. nz
However I am left a bit confused and seek clarification on some of the terminology that is used in the reply.
What do the NZ Police mean by the term "generated" in the following statement?
"The figure Chris Cahill has provided in the above statement has been generated by the Police Association"
Do the New Zealand Police mean that the Police Association have obtained the figures from another source other than the NZ police, or have they somehow generated them?
A reasonable person would conclude that if the Police Association were quoting figures on seized firearms and a specific policing district, that they would have obtained this information from the NZ Police.
There would be no other agency that would have access to this information. But yet your response clearly states that the NZ police do not hold this information.
I wish the NZ Police to clarify what exactly what is meant when the police have used the terminology "generated" as in the context of the statement above, then I will approach the Police Association for their view on where they obtained the clear and precise figures of seized firearms.
Can you also please confirm that if the Police association have generated their own figures, that they are not official figures obtained from the NZ Police and they cannot be relied upon for statistical purposes..
Yours sincerely,
Malcolm Lock

Dear Mr Lock
Thanks for your email.
We understand that the 538 figure Chris Cahill quotes has been produced (generated) from figures collated by the Police Association. The Police Association press release on this matter (found at https://www.policeassn.org.nz/newsroom/p...) states that 'the Association keeps a record of firearms incidents reported by its members’.
You will need to direct your queries about this figure to the Police Association.
If you are interested in NZ Police’s statistics please refer to the Police website: http://www.police.govt.nz/about-us/publi... or you may submit a request under the Official Information Act 1982 asking for Police’s statistics. You are welcome to send such a request direct to me.
I trust this helps.
Kind regards
Ali
