Office of the Controller and Auditor-General

Dear Mr Reid

Thank you for your information request.

You asked for information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the OIA) that our office might hold about the outsourcing of student services by Unitec Institute of Technology.

The OIA does not apply to the Office of the Auditor-General. Instead, the Public Audit Act 2001 gives us discretion on what information we release. This is so the Auditor-General can fully maintain her role as an independent Officer of Parliament.

As standard practice, we do not release copies of correspondence received by our office. We consider that it is important for people to be able to raise matters with us in confidence.

We do not release copies of our audit work on public entities beyond what is contained in the audit opinions that those entities publish in their annual reports. You can request information directly from a public entity, in this case Unitec.

For the reasons outlined above, we are declining your request for information.

We can advise that we have not published any reports recently about Unitec. We have published the Auditor-General’s letter to all tertiary institutions about service performance reporting. This letter can be viewed here: www.oag.govt.nz/2015/tei-reporting.

If you have concerns about the actions or decisions of a public entity, we encourage you to raise these directly with the entity. You are also welcome to send us information about a public entity, which we will keep on file for use in our work across the public sector.

Regards

Jude Hutton
