KiwiRail
Good morning Mr Palmer
We refer to your Official Information Act 1982 request dated 1 January
2016 containing the following questions:
During 2015, there were a number of articles in the media about this
system being reviewed, what is the current status/update on the NIMT
electric locomotives and Electrification review?
Is the system being reined with locomotives overhauled?
KiwiRail is currently undertaking a review of the EF (electric) locomotive
fleet and is considering a number of options including, but not limited
to: replacement with new, more reliable electric locomotives;
refurbishment of the existing EFs; or replacement with a diesel fleet.
A final decision on the EF locomotives will not be made until we have
carefully reviewed all options and examined the business case for each.
As part of our overall investigation, we will consider the operational,
environmental, social and economic factors associated with each option.
Under s28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and
review of this response by way of complaint to the Ombudsman. Refer to
[1]www.ombudsman.govt.nz for more information.
