Council Dues - Cargo
John B Smith made this Official Information request to Chatham Islands Council
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for John B Smith to read a recent response and update the status.
From: John B Smith
Dear Chatham Islands Council,
Please advise the total amount of money received in Council Dues on freight in the last financial year as per the Chatham Islands Council Act 1995, and published on your website.
Please split this between sea freight and air freight and, for each of these, total import dues and export dues split by the type of cargo carried as per the categories published on your website. Where this is not cost or time effective to provide, please consolidate into high value shellfish, fish, animals and general cargo.
Where any amounts have not been paid to the Council at year-end please advise the total amount owing, split by air freight and sea freight.
Please advise whether any meetings have been held, currently or in the past 10 years, to discuss adjusting these import dues to alleviate the cost of living for Islanders.
Yours faithfully,
Jonathon Smith

Thank you for your enquiry under the Official Information and Meetings Act
request regarding Council Dues collected under the Chatham Islands Council
Act 1995.
The total amounts received from Council Dues for the last financial year
and year‑to‑date, split between air freight and sea freight, along with
the corresponding outstanding balances is provided below for your
information. No balances have been written off in relation to Council
Dues.
The Council does not record information at a more detailed level than the
air freight/sea freight split already provided. The appropriate
organisations to contact for more granular information are the
administrators of the dues, who may hold the operational level data
relating to cargo categories and movements you require.
You also asked whether any meetings have been held in the past 10 years to
discuss adjusting import dues to help reduce the cost of living for
Islanders. Aside from the standard discussions that occur as part of the
Council’s Long Term Plan and Annual Plan processes, where all fees and
charges are reviewed and set for the year, the Council is not aware of any
separate meetings on this topic.
It’s worth highlighting that Council Dues were originally introduced
specifically to ease the financial pressure on island households. By
shifting part of the Council’s operational costs from residents to
organisations carrying out commercial activities on the islands, the level
of rates required from each households was reduced. This approach was
designed from the outset to support the community and help manage the cost
of living.
Council Dues have also remained unchanged since they were first
established, despite significant inflationary pressures on the Council and
its operations over time.
If you require any further clarification on these points, please feel free
to get in touch.
