Dear Auckland Transport,
AT issues infringement notices for private vehicles in bus lanes relying on their unmanned cameras with this statement about emissions:
"Modal shift changes along arterials, including encouraging micro mobility as first and last leg travel options, is one way Auckland Transport can meet its Climate Change and Emission Objectives"
Regarding your Climate Change and Emission Objectives. Would you please share the monthly emissions and carbon footprint of your unmanned bus lane monitoring systems throughout Auckland?
Please share the monthly kilowatt hours electricity consumption of
1. All the Auckland bus lane cameras and their hours of operation, eg 24/7 or 7am-7pm or 10am-4pm Mon-friday only etc
2. The Network routers and network switches for these bus lane cameras and their hours of operation as above.
3. The servers in data centers storing the bus lane footage and their hours of operation
4. The consumption for the backups of the bus lane footage and their hours of operation.
5. The consumption for the cooling air conditioning for the data centers to keep the air temperature around 16C which is the industry standard air temperature for server operation. If AT use a cloud service, please share the cost per month of this cloud service,
Total Number of Devices for monitoring
6. Please provide the total number of unmanned bus lane cameras in Auckland and their wattage/consumption.
7. Please provide the number of network routers and switches required for the operation of these camera devices.
8. Please provide the number of servers for storing the bus lane footage.

Auckland Transport (AT) acknowledges receipt of your request for official
information dated 7 January 2026 for monthly kilowatt hours electricity
consumption and total number of devices for monitoring in relation to
carbon emissions from Bus Lane Cameras used by AT.
To comply with our statutory obligation, our decision is due to you by 10
February 2026. This is 20 working days after the day your request was
received. If we are unable to make a decision within this timeframe, we
will be in contact. Please note this includes the summer holiday
close-down period from 20 December 2025 to 10 January 2026, Auckland
Anniversary on 26 January 2026, and Waitangi Day on 6 February 2026 as
this period is classed as non-working days.
We will be in contact at our earliest convenience if we require
clarification, or if your requested information is held by another agency.
