I refer to your request for information dated 7 January 2026 regarding carbon emissions from bus
lane cameras. Please find our response below.
Regarding your Climate Change and Emission Objectives. Would you please share the monthly
emissions and carbon footprint of your unmanned bus lane monitoring systems throughout
Auckland? Please share the monthly kilowatt hours electricity consumption of

Bus lane cameras operate 24/7 – they operate outside of their enforcement window. Your request

exist. The cooling infrastructure varies between local data centres, and cooling is part of the
service backed into the data centre rack usage fees.
AT does not use a cloud service for bus lane enforcement.
6. Please provide the total number of unmanned bus lane cameras in Auckland and their
wattage/consumption.
There are 331 unmanned bus lane cameras in Auckland. Your request for monthly kilowatt hours
electricity consumption for the unmanned bus lane cameras is declined under section 17(e) of the

7. Please provide the number of network routers and switches required for the operation of
these camera devices.

exist. The network routers and switches are not configured or segregated in a way that allows us to
report specifically on bus lane camera usage.
8. Please provide the number of servers for storing the bus lane footage.

Background
We are unable to provide kWh electricity consumption specific to SVL or bus-lane cameras
because our systems do not measure electricity use at that level of detail. CCTV equipment draws
power from shared sources—such as streetlights or buildings—meaning electricity usage for bus
lane cameras is not metered separately from other network operations.
Additionally, we do not have individual metering for components involved in storing or transmitting
bus-lane footage, such as data centres, cooling systems, routers, or switches. Our infrastructure
was not designed to capture electricity consumption at such a granular level.
Estimating usage is also not feasible without substantial work to identify the make and model of
every component and calculate average consumption. This level of analysis is not currently
available within our operational systems.
Should you believe that we have not dealt with your request appropriately, you are able to make a
complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman in accordance with section 27(3) of the LGOIMA Act
and seek an investigation and review regarding this matter.
