I am writing to acknowledge receipt of your Official Information Act 1982

later than 12 February 2026, being 20 working days after the date your
request was received.

Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 23
December 2025, in which you requested:
“I seek the following information for the 2025 academic year:
1. The number of students that recieved each grade (ie. no. of A+, A, A-
etc.) for all papers offered by Victoria University of Wellington.
2. AND the average grades for all papers offered by Victoria University
of Wellington.
3. AND The number of students enrolled in each course offered by Victoria
University of Wellington.”
Your request as currently framed would require substantial collation and
research to respond. There are more 1,900 courses that the University
offers. To collate all information requested would create significant and
unreasonable impact on the University's ability to carry out its other
operations. Accordingly, your request is likely to be refused under
section 18(f) of the OIA.
Additionally, as post-graduate courses typically have low numbers of
students, there are significant risks of the information identifying
personal information about individuals, which would need to be withheld
under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA.
In order to assist us in preparing a response, can you please confirm
whether you are happy to amend your request to be limited to around 10
courses of your choosing, and specify if you want a full breakdown of the
grades for each or if you are comfortable with aggregated data to avoid
risks to individual privacy.
If there is any additional information you can provide that can assist us
to narrow the scope of your request, please let us know.
Please reply with confirmation of the above by Friday 9 January 2026. If
we do not hear back from you in this time, we will proceed with your
original request.
Please note, any clarification or amendment of a request is considered to
be a new request for the purpose of calculating the maximum statutory
timeframe for response—see section 15(1AA) of the Official Information
Act.

From: Saran
Dear OIA Requests,
Thank you for your response. I understand the concerns raised, and I am happy to amend my request as follows:
For the following courses — HLTH 521, HLTH 528, HLTH 518, HLTH 524, HLTH 501, HLTH 502, GOVT 512, GOVT 513, GOVT 514, GOVT 521, GOVT 522, GOVT 523, HLWB 501, HLWB 507, HLWB 508, HLWB 509, HLWB 510, HLWB 511, HLWB 512, HLWB 520, HLWB 521, HLWB 525, HLWB 526 — I seek the following information for the 2025 academic year:
1. The number of students who received each final grade (i.e., the number of A+, A, A-, etc.) for each course. Where the release of grade distributions would pose a significant risk to student privacy, I request the average final grade for that course instead.
2. AND The number of students enrolled in each course
Please note that HLTH 502 and HLTH 518 are offered in both Trimester 1 and Trimester 2. I therefore request that the information for these courses be provided separately by trimester.
Yours sincerely,
Saran
