Don’t Drink and Drive, Be a Legend

From: Monique
Dear Simeon Brown,
Hope you’re all good. Can you please treat this as an Official Information Act request. I’m after some info about road deaths, crashes, and night-time transport.
1. Road Deaths and Serious Crashes
For the last four years (2022–2025), can you please send through:
How many people died on Auckland roads each year.
How many of those deaths were from people driving (not passengers or pedestrians).
How many happened at night – like when the streetlights are on or similar.
Of those night-time ones, how many were on:
Fridays
Saturdays
Public holidays
Sundays where the Monday after was a public holiday.
And could you give me the same breakdown for serious crashes (not deaths but proper injuries)?
2. Cost of Deaths
For each of those years, what’s the:
Direct cost per road death (whatever measure you use).
Indirect or social cost per death (like wider community or economic cost).
If you use Waka Kotahi or Ministry of Transport numbers, all good – just say where they came from.
3. Parking and Night Transport
What’s the current fine for not paying for parking on Princes Street, Auckland CBD?
Any plans or policies to make public transport easier to get home from the city at night?
Any plans to discourage drink driving by making late-night buses or trains cheaper or more available?
Any policies or discretion for cancelling parking fines if someone parked up to stop their mate from drink driving — basically doing a “Legend” moment like in the Ghost Chips ad? Would be mean if that kind of community good deed could be recognised.
Keen to hear what’s being done to keep people safe on the roads while still making it easier for good sorts to make smart choices at night.
Cheers heaps,
Monique L
