Your request for information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987
(LGOIMA) – (case number CAS-1236861-Q7Z2T4)
Kia ora Monique,
I refer to your official information request dated 19 November 2025 regarding parking and night
transportation in Auckland.
What’s the current fine for not paying for parking on Princes Street, Auckland CBD?
The current fine for not paying for parking in Auckland CBD, including Princes Street, is
$70, as set under
national legislation.
Any plans or policies to make public transport easier to get home from the city at night?
In August 2025, Auckland Transport (AT) extended the frequency of bus services, so that they run every 15
minutes until midnight 7 days a week. This applies to all frequent bus services leaving the city centre.
City Rail Link, when it goes live, will provide more late-night train services to Midtown and Uptown, with
trains running until at least 10:30, seven days a week from Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape stations. In
the future, we are hoping to be able to run trains until midnights, 7 days a week.
AT are also considering (with Auckland Council) our policy regarding night buses. Currently we only run
night buses (those running after midnight) on Friday and Saturday nights. We are reviewing this policy and
compiling evidence to investigate further.
Any plans to discourage drink driving by making late-night buses or trains cheaper or more available?
There are no plans to introduce off-peak or evening fares in Auckland. Therefore, this part of your request
is declined under section 17(e) of the LGOIMA as the requested information does not exist.
However, by providing more frequency on buses and trains late at night, options for travel ing by public
transport will be more appealing, whether it is travelling home from a show at the Civic or a late night on
Karangahape Road. The reasons to drive will become less and less.
Any policies or discretion for cancel ing parking fines if someone parked up to stop their mate from drink
driving — basical y doing a “Legend” moment like in the Ghost Chips ad? Would be mean if that kind of
community good deed could be recognised.
There are no policies or discretions for cancelling tickets who have stopped a mate from drink driving.
Therefore, this part of your request is declined under section 17(e) of the LGOIMA as the requested
information does not exist.
AT are not able to waive fines based on intent or circumstances where someone was acting responsibly.
Whilst we support the goal of keeping people safe and making smart choices, the parking rules exist to
ensure fairness and availability for all road users. Allowing discretion outside the legal framework would
make enforcement inconsistent and could undermine the system.
AT continues to invest in road safety initiatives, including speed management, safer street designs, and
campaigns to reduce drink driving. These programmes aim to make it easier for everyone to get home
safely without needing to take risks.
We trust this clarifies your request, but should you believe that we have not dealt with your request
appropriately, you are able to make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman in accordance with
section 27(3) of the LGOIMA Act and seek an investigation and review in regard to this matter.
Ngā mihi,
