How often is new identity information created for security or law-enforcement purposes?

Alex Harris made this Official Information request to Department of Internal Affairs

The request was refused by Department of Internal Affairs.

From: Alex Harris

Dear Department of Internal Affairs,

Section 65 of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995 allows the Minister of Internal Affairs to direct the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages to create new identity information for law enforcement or security purposes. I would like to request the following information under the OIA:

* How many times in the last five years has the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages been directed to create new identity information under section 65(2)(a) of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995?
* How many times in the last five years has the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages been directed to create new identity information under section 65(2)(b) of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995?

I understand that sections 6(a) and 6(c) OIA may be engaged by this request, but please note that I am requesting only statistical information rather than specifics. I am not seeking to know the identities concerned, or even when they were created, but rather get a broad sense of how often this clause of the Act is used.

I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about
this request will be automatically forwarded to me by the
fyi.org.nz website.

With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ.

Yours faithfully,

Alex Harris

Dear Department of Internal Affairs,

Section 65 of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships

the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages to create new
identity information for law enforcement or security purposes. I would
like to request the following information under the OIA:

* How many times in the last five years has the Registrar-General of
Births, Deaths and Marriages been directed to create new identity

Births, Deaths and Marriages been directed to create new identity
information under section 65(2)(b) of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and
Relationships Registration Act 1995?

I understand that sections 6(a) and 6(c) OIA may be engaged by this
request, but please note that I am requesting only statistical information
rather than specifics. I am not seeking to know the identities concerned,
or even when they were created, but rather get a broad sense of how often
this clause of the Act is used.

I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about this
request will be automatically forwarded to me by the fyi.org.nz website.

With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ.
