Maintenance of flowerbed on the corner of Hgh Steet and Tuam Street

Simon made this Official Information request to Christchurch City Council

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Simon to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Simon

Dear Christchurch City Council,

I'm looking for information about the ongoing maintenance of a flower bed in the city.

The flower bed is located on the corner of St Asaph Street and High Street. I'm unsure of the exact address its adjacent to C1 Espresso located at 185 High Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8142

This is a street view of the flowerbed: https://maps.app.goo.gl/oaN5vDpAXV4x7HfR6

Specifically, I am looking for information about

* How much is spent annually on the maintenance and replanting of the flower bed?
* What is the maintenance schedule for the flower bed? For example, we notice the entire bed appears to get replanted approximately once every 3-6 months
* What happens to the plants once they are removed from the flowerbed?

If possible are you able to provide any further commentary or context about how this compares to the maintenance of other similar garden beds in the city which are maintained by the Christchurch City Council?

Yours faithfully,

Simon

Tēnā koe Simon,

On 7 December 2024, you requested the following information, under the
Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA):

I'm looking for information about the ongoing maintenance of a flower bed
in the city.

The flower bed is located on the corner of St Asaph Street and High
Street. I'm unsure of the exact address its adjacent to C1 Espresso
located at 185 High Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8142

This is a street view of the flowerbed:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/oaN5vDpAXV4x7HfR6

Specifically, I am looking for information about

* How much is spent annually on the maintenance and replanting of the
flower bed?
* What is the maintenance schedule for the flower bed? For example, we
notice the entire bed appears to get replanted approximately once every
3-6 months
* What happens to the plants once they are removed from the flowerbed?

If possible are you able to provide any further commentary or context
about how this compares to the maintenance of other similar garden beds in
the city which are maintained by the Christchurch City Council?

Please find answers to your questions below:

 1. How much is spent annually on the maintenance and replanting of the
flower bed?
The replanting of the annual flowers in this particular bed is
undertaken by our inhouse team alongside annual beds throughout the
Central City area. Plants are purchased in bulk for sites across the
Central City and Botanic Gardens. The average price per bedding plant
is 76 cents. The C1 bed takes 1200 plants and is replanted twice a
year, Summer and Winter. 2400 plants at .76 cents = $1824.00 per year.

 2. What is the maintenance schedule for the flower bed? For example, we
notice the entire bed appears to get replanted approximately once
every 3-6 months
The bedding for all our areas gets replaced every 6 months (Spring and
Autumn) maintenance gets done regularly (every few weeks approx.)

 3. What happens to the plants once they are removed from the flowerbed?
The plants removed from this bed are annuals, this means they complete
their life cycle in one growing season. Once removed the plants are
disposed through Green Waste.

 4. If possible are you able to provide any further commentary or context
about how this compares to the maintenance of other similar garden
beds in the city which are maintained by the Christchurch City
Council?
The maintenance is exactly the same as our other bedding areas, they
get visually monitored on a regular basis and maintained as needed.

You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review our
