john luke made this Official Information request to Ministry of Justice
The request was successful.
From: john luke
Dear Ministry of Justice,
I noted, Advertising Standards Authority: ASA has been listed on this website as a government agency,
https://www.govt.nz/organisations/advert...
May I ask what exactly the ASA is and has ASA been managed by Ministry of Justice or receive funding from Ministry of Justice? If so, how much.
Yours faithfully,
john luke

While the Authority is listed on the New Zealand Government website, which
is owned and maintained by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), that
does not mean it is a government agency. You may want to contact the DIA
about the inclusion of the Authority on its website by emailing:
[2][email address]
Information about the work of the Authority is outlined on its website,
which says it is the self-regulatory organisation of the New Zealand
advertising industry. Additionally, in the FAQ section it says:
o Is the Advertising Standards Authority a government agency?
o No. The Advertising Standards Authority is an industry organisation.
It is supported by advertisers, advertising agencies and media
organisations to maintain standards in advertising. The Advertising
Codes set out the rules that advertisements are to comply with to
ensure they are responsible.
The Ministry does not fund or manage the Authority. As its website notes
"it is funded from member subscriptions and advertiser levies”. The member
organisations of the ASA are listed on its website at: at:

As the information you have requested is either publicly available, or
does not exist, your request is refused under sections 18(d) and 18(e) of
the Act.
You have the right under section 28 of the Act to complain to the
Ombudsman about my response. The contact details for the Ombudsman are
