Tēnā koe Tristan

Thank you for your email of 30 May 2024 to the Ministry/Minister of
Education requesting the following information:

I am requesting communications you have on record with Auckland Grammar
and St Cuthbert's schools or their employed staff. In particular, all
communications related to NCEA and curriculum reviews.

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act).

Your request, as currently worded, is very broad in nature and scope and
lacks due particularity. As it stands, your request would include a large
amount of information including any interaction the Ministry has had with
the schools, which would require a substantial amount of time to collate.
As such, it is likely that your request would be refused under section
18(f) of the Act, as the information requested cannot be made available
without substantial collation or research.

In the hope that we may be able to avoid refusing your request, we would
be grateful if you could provide further detail on the nature of the
information you are looking for, including a refined time period, a key
decision, or a key document.

We recommend an amendment to the timeframe of your request to information
from the last six months.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please respond by 18 June 2024 so
that we can commence work on your request.

Please note that in line with Section 15 (1AA) of the Act, if a request is
amended or clarified after the date on which it is received, the Ministry
may treat the amended or clarified request as a new request that replaces
the original request.

Tēnā koe Tristan

Thank you for your email of 30 May 2024 to the Ministry/Minister of Education requesting the following information:

'I am requesting communications you have on record with Auckland Grammar and St Cuthbert's schools or their employed staff. In particular, all communications related to NCEA and curriculum reviews.'

Thank you also for your amendment of 19 June 2024, requesting the following information:

'I would like to limit the query to the last 12 months, and limit it exclusively to communications related to curriculum and assessment reviews.'

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).

Your request, as currently worded, is still broad in nature and scope and lacks due particularity. It would likely still be refused under section 18(f) of the Act, as the information requested cannot be made available without substantial collation or research.

The Ministry has a number of interactions with schools on a day to day basis, which may include a variety of communications related to curriculum and assessment reviews.

In order for us to provide information which will be of interest to you, can you please provide clarity on the following questions, in the hope that we may be able to avoid refusing your request under section 18(f) of the Act:

- Can you please provide further context of the type of information sought with ‘Curriculum and assessment reviews’
Could you please explain specifically what you mean by ‘curriculum and assessment reviews’. The term ‘curriculum and assessment reviews’ is considered broad and could be interpreted to include a large number of initiatives across the Ministry’s work programme.
- Are you happy for us to exclude ‘all schools’ communications from our response, such as school bulletins, which are sent to all schools and not specifically Auckland Grammar and St Cuthbert’s?

We look forward to hearing from you. Please respond by 4 July 2024 so that we can commence work on your request.

Please note that in line with Section 15 (1AA) of the Act, if a request is amended or clarified after the date on which it is received, the Ministry may treat the amended or clarified request as a new request that replaces the original request.

From: Tristan

Dear Enquiries National,

As the Review of Achievement Standards and NZ Curriculum Refresh are discrete projects within the Ministry with specific intended outcomes, I don't think it's too broad. I am looking for substantive communications that might reasonably be expected to have shaped the outcomes/direction/content for these projects.

I am not seeking communications sent to all schools and am happy for you to exclude that.

Yours sincerely,

Tristan
