Will Your government Do something about Lane splitting and motorcyclists cutting in and out of traffic. The Law says Lane splitting is legal but We feel like this should be changed as it causes more deaths on the road.

The reason stated for the request is flawed, as there is an assumption that lane splitting/filtering "causes more deaths on the roads".

In 2023 the road toll was 340, 53 of which were motorcyclists. That is a high proportion, granted. The vast majority are 40+ and no passengers were killed. ALL happened rurally at, or near the highway speed limit, rather than in urban areas. Most deaths occurred without other Road User involvement (failed to make a corner). Of all motorcycle accidents (fatal and non fatal) involving Other Road Users, the Other Road User is found at fault in two thirds of cases. Of fatal accidents involving motorcycles were the motorcyclist is at fault has a very small pool of data, but stats indicate 70% were head on collisions when overtaking.

The findings into motorcycle crashes have been thoroughly investigated, ACC + Road To Zero's MSS stated in it's 2021 report "Other Road Users tend to think interactions with motorcyclists are risky. Other Road Users often have little empathy for riders because they see them as reckless".

Given the wider ignorance of other road users, and poor attitude & understanding (an example being this request, perhaps) instead of banning filtering/lane splitting, I think this highlights the need to actively feature the issue in car driver theory tests and perhaps a media campaign to highlight poor obvs & attitudes of entitlement of car drivers.
