Attachment Capital Project Initiation Brief 930 Sockburn Roundabout Intersection Improvement 2072021.pdf

Dear Cody,

Thank you for your email, received on 01.06.2023. You requested the
following information, under the Local Government Official Information and
Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA):

“Are there any improvements planned for the Sockburn Roundabout in the
next 10 years? Please supply details. If not, how would someone propose
said improvements?”.

Please find below a response to your LGOIMA request.

A safety improvement project for the roundabout is included in the current
Long-Term Plan, with investigations scheduled for 2025-27, and potential
delivery programmed at 2034-37. The project is at concept stage, with the
attached 2021 Project initiation brief providing background and scoping of
the project. Such briefs are updated to ensure they are still relevant.
However, the update has been held, given that the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)
route announced by Waka Kotahi recently shows the MRT route going through
the roundabout alignment.  More certainly on the progress of MRT will
occur in July when the Waka Kotahi Board consider the Indicative Business
Case. If the Indicative Business Case is approved and funding is confirmed
for the next phase of the business case process, the next step for Waka
Kotahi will be to investigate in more detail the design of the corridor
and stations along the route.

Council will seek further guidance from Waka Kotahi on how the MRT affects
the viability of the Sockburn Roundabout safety improvement scheme
following the Waka Kotahi Board Announcement on whether the MRT progresses
to the next planning phase.

You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review our
decision. Complaints can be sent by email to
[1][email address].

Publication of responses to LGOIMA requests

Please note: our LGOIMA responses may be published on the Christchurch
City Council website a month after they have been responded to, with
requesters’ personal details withheld. If you have any concerns about
this, please contact the Official Information team on
[2][email address].

Yours sincerely,
