MBCHB Rural and UTAS admissions processing
Lum made this Official Information request to University of Auckland
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Lum to read recent responses and update the status.
From: Lum
Dear University of Auckland,
I have the following questions regarding the MBCHB Waitlist process:
1. For the admission into years 2022, 2023 and 2024 for mbchb are waitlisted applicants in each UTAS category split into a first year and graduate waitlists (e.g. Rural admissions scheme (RAS) first year and graduate waitlists or a single RAS waitlists. Is this same for other UTAS such as Students with disabilities?)
2. What does the UTAS position of the waitlist represent? (E.g. who is considered under this scheme).
3. How does the UTAS waitlist differ from RAS, SWD and other waitlists?
4. Can an individual be position 1 on the UTAS waitlist, but simultaneously be position 5 on the RAS waitlist? Is this the same for other waitlist categories?
5. How many successful waitlisted SWD applicants for 2024 admission have received an offer for MBCHB?
Yours faithfully

Dear requester,
I refer to your request of 21 February 2024. As consultations necessary to
make a decision on your request are such that a response cannot reasonably
be given within the original time limit, the University has extended the
time limit for your request under section 15A(1)(b) of the OIA. The new
maximum time limit for the University’s response is 27 March 2024; we will
respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable. You have the
right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are dissatisfied with
this extension.
Yours sincerely,
Landon Watt

University of Auckland
Dear requester,
I refer to your request of 21 February 2024. The University’s response
follows:
“1. For the admission into years 2022, 2023 and 2024 for mbchb are
waitlisted applicants in each UTAS category split into a first year and
graduate waitlists (e.g. Rural admissions scheme (RAS) first year and
graduate waitlists or a single RAS waitlists. Is this same for other UTAS
such as Students with disabilities?)”
MBChB Part II waitlists are not split into FY and Grad categories.
“2. What does the UTAS position of the waitlist represent? (E.g. who is
considered under this scheme).”
UTAS means “Undergraduate Targeted Admissions Schemes”. The University’s
UTAS Policy is available here:
[1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about-us/a...
The UTAS for the MBChB Part II are MAPAS (Maori and Pacific Admission
Scheme), SWD (Students with Disabilities), LSEB (Low Socio-Economic
Background), and SRB (Students from Refugee Backgrounds). RRAS (Regional
and Rural Admissions Scheme) is not a UTAS. More information about
eligibility for individual UTAS is publicly available on the University’s
website:
[2]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/study/appl...
“3. How does the UTAS waitlist differ from RAS, SWD and other waitlists?”
Technically there is no “UTAS waitlist”. There are separate waitlists for
RRAS, SWD, SRB, LSEB, and General.
Note that, under r 12 of the Undergraduate Targeted Admission Schemes
Policy and Procedures, "unallocated UTAS places are to be automatically
available first to Māori and UTAS groups and then to general places". The
process for the re-allocation of unallocated UTAS places under r 12 has
been referred to unofficially as a "UTAS waitlist”.
“4. Can an individual be position 1 on the UTAS waitlist, but
simultaneously be position 5 on the RAS waitlist? Is this the same for
other waitlist categories?”
As stated above for q3, technically there is no “UTAS waitlist”. The
following addresses your question about actual waitlists.
o Any applicant considered under an admissions category may go on the
waitlist for that category. An applicant being considered under the
General category may also be considered under one of the following
UTAS: SWD, LSEB, or SRB. An applicant considered under RRAS or MAPAS
is only considered under that category.
o If an applicant goes onto the General waitlist and, for example, the
SWD waitlist, then they may be ranked at different positions on those
waitlists. Waitlists are managed so that, if one applicant would
receive a waitlist offer from both the General waitlist and another
waitlist, they are made an offer under the General waitlist only.
5. How many successful waitlisted SWD applicants for 2024 admission have
received an offer for MBCHB?
One SWD waitlist offer was made for 2024 admission to the MBChB Part II.

Landon Watt
